Wake Up. Kick Ass. Repeat.

I have so many ideas swirling around in my head!  The ideas are easy.  But with only 24 precious hours in a day, sometimes implementation is hard.  So every single day I use this mantra to maximize my production and drive me forward.

One of my ideas is to create an online gallery showcasing some of my digital art work.  It’s a project I’ve been working on, but with all the other stuff going on… it seems like it’s taking forever.  Nevertheless, I want to begin sharing some of my work with you, and there’s no time like the present.  So let’s begin with my buddy, Rex...

We’ve all heard the clichés…

  • Life is short
  • You only live once
  • Carpe diem
  • Seize the day

Those phrases became universal maxims of wisdom because they are demonstrable from generation to generation.  They’re reliable.  They’re trustworthy.

Wake Up. Kick Ass. Repeat. is a 21st century evolution of those powerful ideas.

It is an imperative that echos ancient truths and quietly roars the wisdom of the ages.

Wake Up. Kick Ass. Repeat. stands on the shoulders of those who’ve come and gone before us.

And it motivates us to square our shoulders, stop wasting time, stop making excuses… and live full throttle every single day.

My pet name for the lion in this piece is “Rex.”

The Piece and its Meaning:

I admit the words Wake Up. Kick Ass. Repeat. sound more like a Jeff Foxworthy “redneck” routine than ancient wisdom from the book of Proverbs.  That’s why I used an atmospheric sepia tone and heavy vignetting around the perimeter.  I wanted to elevate the message and create a wall-worthy piece from common (if not crass) vernacular.

When I sat down to create Wake Up. Kick Ass. Repeat. I knew I wanted the visuals to communicate more than the words themselves.  For example, I chose a wild, reckless font for the words Kick Ass because I wanted them to communicate bold, kinetic action.  Fearless Action is the key to greatness.

And speaking of fearlessness, that’s one of the many reasons I chose Rex to be the focal point of the piece.  Rex is the King of the jungle.  He’s powerful.  Relentless.  Unstoppable.  Ferocious.  Nothing scares him.  Nothing can prevent him from taking what’s his.

Yes, he is mortal, but in this moment that is not important.  For right now — today — Rex is the king of all ass kickers, and We. Will. Hear. Him. Roar!

I want to be Rex.  I think about him (and his message) every single day, without fail.

I often find myself repeating the mantra in my head…

Wake Up. Kick Ass. Repeat.

Wake Up. Kick Ass. Repeat.

Wake Up. Kick Ass. Repeat.

It helps me to keep marching forward.  It helps me to power through my dark thoughts and fears.

Yes, I know… of course… Rex was born king.  Most of us are not so lucky.  Most of us have to build our own kingdoms — and many of us start with nothing.  We must lay our own foundations and bake our own bricks.  We mix our own mortar with dreams of someday laying our own capstones.  It’s hard, gritty work.  It’s a daily grind.  And Wake Up. Kick Ass. Repeat. is the mind-fuel we need to brute force our way into self-made greatness.

Thankfully, we live in amazing times! We’re free to raise our own rafters and roar from our own rooftops.

And if we will do the heavy lifting…  if we will command the courage to become daily ass kickers… if we will abolish self-doubt and ignore the naysayers… nothing can stop us!  And we will become the kings (and queens) of our own domains.

Thank you for reading.  I love you.

  1. Amy, I very much like Rex. It is not only a superb piece of art but also a great message for all of us.

    Wake Up. Kick Ass. Repeat.

A perfect mantra for our time.

    • Albert,

I’m really glad that you like it. Your encouragement means the world to me. The mantra truly is a constant presence in my brain, and I hope others benefit from the idea.

  2. I don’t even know where to start. I think I need to take time to sort through my thoughts. I know you understand why but I want to give you a thoughtful email about it.

  3. What an incredibly inspirational message! I’ve been back multiple times to soak this up since you first posted it. I will forever keep this in my back pocket and reference/return to it often.

It says to me, move forward in confidence, seek out and focus on the positive elements of each day, be an inspiration to those around you, make an impact and leave your mark on the world…no regrets!!!

    • My dear, JBO!

Where is Mountnscrew with his “goddamn right” gif? I couldn’t have said it better myself.

There is a version of this saying floating around the Internet that adds “Be Kind.” after “Kick Ass.” I prefer this briefer version, because to me, being kind is an integral part of kicking ass.

As an entrepreneur (and just as a good human) delighting others without fear is the road to success and happiness.
